Transgenic animals are allowing us to make more vaccinations available. We can help fortify and infuse their products (such as milk and eggs) with nutrients which will help protect people from diseases and help build immunity. Best of all, they allow us to research and learn more about what genes do.
Transgenic animals are animals which have had genes inserted into their DNA.
They can be used for:
1) Research – they can help us learn more about the functions of specific genes. Now that the human genome has been sequenced, scientists are working to find all the varying purposes of different genes. Unlike the way scientists use RNAi to turn off different genes to identify their function by observing what stopped working, this method would make it look like genes in the animal have been turned on.
2) Medicine or fortified foods – animals can be inserted with a gene that would cause the animal to produce products with special proteins or vitamins. Cows can make milk with proteins and chickens can lay eggs with antibodies.
3) Industry – Genes can be inserted that would allow more product output from animals. Cows can make more milk, chickens, more eggs..OR animals can be used to create other products. Goats in
